“Built for the road. Born for history.”
A Legend Forged in ’88
In 1988, as Australia celebrated 200 years of nationhood, Mack Trucks Australia marked a
milestone of its own — 25 years of building trucks for the toughest roads on earth. To honour both occasions, Mack produced something extraordinary: the Bicentennial Super-Liner. A limited-run masterpiece, it would go on to become one of the most iconic big rigs in Australian history.
Only 16 units were ever built, each one individually named and finished by hand. Many featured comforts unheard of at the time — a sleeper box, fridge, television, and premium interior fittings — placing them at the cutting edge of long-haul comfort and capability in 1988.
Built Tough. Driven Proud.
From hauling freight across red-dust plains to powering through long linehaul routes, the
Bicentennial Super-Liner became a symbol of Aussie work ethic and pride. Its chrome, stance, and unmistakable Mack growl earned it a place in trucking legend.
Symbol of a Nation on Wheels
Decades later, these trucks remain cherished icons — reminders of the golden age of Australian trucking. They stand for heritage, honour, craftsmanship, and hard yakka — values that still drive the men and women who keep Australia moving.

THE BEGINNING
In the mid-1950s, Australia was taking on one of the greatest engineering feats in its history — the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme. Sir Leslie Thiess, the man responsible for keeping the project moving, needed vehicles that could handle snow, shale, mud, and unforgiving alpine climbs.
He imported a small batch of Toyota FJ25s — Japan’s rugged answer to the American Jeep.
The results were immediate: they went anywhere, hauled everything, and came back for more. It was the moment the Land Cruiser legend first took root in Australia.
1960s — THE 40 SERIES ARRIVES
By the early 1960s, Toyota released the 40 Series, a no-nonsense workhorse built for the land.It earned its place on cattle stations, mine sites, coastal towns, and outback crossings.
Farmers used them to tow. Drovers used them to muster. Explorers used them to chase the next horizon. The 40 Series didn’t just become popular — it became part of life.

To honour both occasions, Mack produced something extraordinary: the Bicentennial Super-Liner, now considered one of the most iconic rigs ever built on Australian soil.
Only 16 units were ever produced, each hand-finished and individually named after figures from our nation’s history. These trucks weren’t mass-made; they were crafted with pride — polished metal, prestige trim, and comforts unheard of at the time, such as sleeper boxes, fridges, premium seating, and more.
BUILT TOUGH. DRIVEN PROUD.
From hauling livestock across red-dust plains to powering along the Hume, the Bicentennial Super-Liner didn’t just move freight — it carried the story of a nation on wheels. Its chrome, stance, and unmistakable Mack growl earned it instant legendary status.
SYMBOL OF A NATION ON WHEELS
Decades later, these rare trucks still turn heads at shows and on the highway. They represent craftsmanship, grit, honour, and the golden era of Australian trucking — a time when horsepower, pride, and hard yakka ruled the road.
